When you need to remove links in bulk
- Over-linked content. Articles edited many times often end up linking to the same page five or six times. Keeping only the first link is cleaner for readers.
- Content migrations. Old internal links may point to URLs that no longer exist. Stripping them before re-linking avoids a wave of broken links.
- Syndicated or reused copy. Text pulled from another site or document can carry affiliate or tracking links you do not want.
- Plain-text versions. Email newsletters, print versions or AI training snippets often need the words without the links.
Why repeated links add little
When a page links to the same URL several times, the extra links rarely add SEO value and can make content feel spammy. A single, well-placed link with descriptive anchor text is clearer for both readers and search engines. If you remove duplicates, consider which instance has the best anchor and context, and keep that one.
After cleaning, rebuild a sensible link structure with the Internal Linking Tool.
