What is FAQ schema?
FAQ schema is structured data, written in JSON-LD using schema.org’s FAQPage type, that labels each question and answer on a page. It gives search engines and AI assistants an unambiguous, machine-readable version of content that would otherwise have to be interpreted from the HTML.
Is FAQ schema still worth adding?
Not for rich results. Google narrowed FAQ rich results to government and health sites in 2023, then stopped showing them for every website in May 2026. FAQ also no longer appears in the Rich Results Test, so use the Schema Markup Validator to check your markup instead.
Google has not recommended removing FAQ markup, and well-written FAQs still earn their place:
- They answer real objections that stop people converting, especially on service and product pages.
- They target long-tail, question-based searches that a page’s main copy might not cover.
- Clear question-and-answer pairs are easy for AI assistants to extract and cite. Short, self-contained answers are exactly the kind of passage that tends to appear in AI-generated responses.
Writing FAQs that work
- Use the wording customers actually use. Check Search Console queries, sales call notes and support tickets.
- Answer in the first sentence, then add detail. Aim for 40 to 80 words.
- Keep each FAQ specific to the page it sits on rather than repeating the same set site-wide.
- Make sure every question in the schema is also visible on the page.
