Why word count and reading time matter
Most writing comes with a limit: a meta description, a social post, an assignment, an ad or a client brief. A live count saves guessing. Reading time helps too. Showing "6 min read" at the top of an article sets expectations and can encourage readers to stay.
Does word count affect SEO?
Not directly. Google has repeatedly said word count is not a ranking factor. What matters is whether the page satisfies the search. Comprehensive pages tend to rank for more queries simply because they cover more of a topic, but padding a page to hit a number usually makes it worse.
A more useful approach is to look at what currently ranks, note which questions and subtopics those pages cover, and make sure yours covers them more clearly. Let the length fall out of that.
